Global Oil Markets Are Running on Fumes During Iran War’s Energy Reckoning

As the conflict with Iran stretches into its fourth month, the world’s oil markets are confronting a harsh physical reality that headline inventory numbers obscure. Veteran strategist Jeff Currie of Carlyle Group delivered a sobering assessment Monday: Asia’s tanks are effectively at bottom, Europe stands weeks away from similar pain, and the United States could face acute challenges by July.

The disruption of Middle East exports through the Strait of Hormuz has triggered a genuine supply shock, one that policy gimmicks cannot easily resolve.

Currie, speaking on the sidelines of the UBS Wealth Conference in Singapore, emphasized that much of the world’s reported oil stocks serves as operational buffer rather than readily available supply. Pipelines and storage systems require minimum volumes to function safely, leaving far less flexible crude than governments and analysts often assume. Asia has already reached these minimum operating levels, with product prices—particularly diesel—spiking as a result.

This is not abstract market volatility. It is the direct consequence of a prolonged military engagement that has choked one of the planet’s most vital energy arteries. While the Trump administration pursues decisive action against a regime that has threatened global shipping and nuclear escalation, the immediate costs fall on families filling up at the pump and industries dependent on reliable energy.

The left’s long war on domestic production has left the West more vulnerable than necessary to such shocks.

Europe’s current relief, Currie noted, stems largely from American SPR releases redirected across the Atlantic. That flow cannot persist indefinitely without depleting U.S. buffers precisely when summer driving season peaks. The International Energy Agency has similarly warned of a looming “red zone” in July and August should Middle East exports fail to rebound. These warnings carry weight because they reflect physical constraints, not financial speculation.

Proposals like suspending the federal gasoline tax offer political theater but ignore the core problem: insufficient molecules. Increasing physical supply requires either rapid restoration of Hormuz transit or accelerated domestic development here at home. The latter path aligns with constitutional principles of self-reliance and stewardship of national resources, principles too often sacrificed on the altar of climate ideology.

The irony runs thick. For years, progressive voices celebrated American retreat from energy dominance, pushing reliance on intermittent renewables and foreign suppliers. Now, as conflict disrupts OPEC+ flows, those same voices offer little beyond temporary relief measures that treat symptoms while the disease festers. True energy security demands the very production capacity they have fought to constrain.

President Trump’s approach—prioritizing American strength abroad while unleashing production at home—offers the clearest path forward. Reports indicate the administration resists rushed deals that might leave Iran’s leverage intact.

Every passing day of depleted inventories does indeed strengthen Tehran’s position at the negotiating table, as Currie observed. Yet yielding to urgency would reward aggression rather than deter it.

Markets may eventually stabilize once the Strait reopens, but the deeper lesson endures. Nations that neglect their God-given resources and productive capacity invite precisely this kind of vulnerability.
