Trump Launches Task Forces to Break Food Industry Cartels and Lower Prices for American Families

President Trump has signed an executive order that puts the food giants on notice. Two new task forces—one at the Department of Justice, the other at the Federal Trade Commission—now have a clear mandate: hunt down price-fixing, foreign influence, and monopolistic practices that drive up the cost of groceries and threaten the independence of American farmers and ranchers.

“My Administration will act to determine whether anti-competitive behavior, especially by foreign-controlled companies, increases the cost of living for Americans and address any associated national security threat to food supply chains,” Trump wrote.

He pointed directly at the record of collusion already on the books: “In recent years, certain companies in the American food supply chain have even settled civil suits accusing them of price fixing for tens of millions of dollars.”

The target list is long and familiar—meat processing, seed, fertilizer, and farm equipment—sectors where four or fewer companies often control the majority of the market. Those choke points have produced sticker shock at the checkout lane and squeezed independent producers to the breaking point.

Under the new order, the task forces will investigate, prosecute, and recommend new rules wherever they find evidence of illegal coordination or foreign dominance. The Attorney General and the FTC Chair have 180 days, then again at the one-year mark, to report their findings and proposed fixes to Congress. Those reports go straight to the Speaker of the House, the Senate Majority Leader, and the chairs of the relevant committees—no bureaucracy, no delays.

Trump framed the stakes in plain terms: “An affordable and secure food supply is vital to America’s national and economic security.” When a handful of processors can dictate prices to cattlemen, when two seed companies control 80 percent of the corn market, or when foreign-owned firms gain leverage over fertilizer supplies, the damage hits kitchen tables and national security in equal measure.

For millions of American households, this could mean real relief on eggs, milk, chicken, and beef. For family farmers and small processors, it means a fighting chance against consolidation that has been bleeding rural communities for decades.

This isn’t regulatory tinkering—it’s an all-hands effort to restore competition, protect domestic production, and keep more dollars in American pockets. The task forces are just getting started, but the message to the cartels is already clear: the free ride is over.
