Thanksgiving Price Wars: Retailers Battle Rising Costs to Keep American Holidays Affordable

American families gearing up for Thanksgiving face a familiar squeeze from inflation, with grocery bills still running about 30% higher than before the pandemic. Yet, major retailers are stepping up, slashing prices on holiday meals and turkeys to ease the burden on shoppers. This move comes as the nation’s turkey supply hits a 40-year low, battered by an alleged resurgence in avian flu outbreaks.

Nearly 1.3 million turkeys have fallen victim to the flu since October, with Minnesota and surrounding states taking the hardest hit, according to USDA figures. The National Turkey Federation assures there’s still enough birds to go around for the big day, but fresh and specialty options might get scarce if the outbreaks worsen.

Despite these supply pressures pushing wholesale turkey prices upward, grocers refuse to pass the full cost onto consumers. Instead, they’re digging into their own profits to offer deals that make Thanksgiving feasible for cash-strapped households. Millions of Americans grapple with food insecurity, worsened by the government’s freeze on SNAP benefits, and most report shelling out more at the checkout than they did a year ago—even as officials claim prices are dropping.

This affordability crunch has reshaped shopping patterns, driving people toward stores that deliver real value. Retailers recognize that in tough times, loyalty hinges on helping families stretch their dollars. “This is ‘the most aggressive pricing environment since the pandemic,'” says retail analyst Bruce Winder.

Take Walmart, for example. They’re holding steady on last year’s pricing for a meal feeding 10 people at around $4 per head, though the bundle trims back a few items from 2024. Over at Kroger, their revived Freshgiving package clocks in under $4.75 per person— the lowest in four years—built around affordable private-label products.

Target isn’t sitting idle either, dropping prices on 3,000 items overall and pricing turkeys at 79 cents a pound. Their meal for four rings up at just under $20, a single penny cheaper than last year after swapping out a couple of components.

Discount chains are going even further. Aldi offers a spread for 10 at $40, or about $4 each, including a 14-pound turkey, beating out their own deal from the previous season. Lidl undercuts that with a $36 meal for the same group size—nearly $10 less than before—and app users can snag turkeys for as low as 25 cents per pound.

These deep cuts often rely on smaller bundles or store brands to keep costs down, but the end result benefits everyday Americans trying to maintain traditions without breaking the bank. “Grocers can’t afford to keep losing money on food forever. But in a market where loyalty is everything, they see it as the cost of staying relevant,” Winder adds.

These retailer efforts provide a welcome buffer for American households. By absorbing the pain from supply chain woes and higher input costs, stores like these reinforce the importance of competitive markets in protecting consumers. As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a reminder that innovation and rivalry in the retail sector can help counter broader economic headwinds, ensuring families across the country can gather around the table without added financial stress.
